Boquete's annual International Coffee and Flower Festival has kicked off with fireworks, parades, a visit from President Martin Torrijos and thousands for visitors from all over the world. Each year, Boquete celebrates the beginning of "summer" (here at the equator that means December through March) and the coffee harvest with an all out 10 day party. Outside the fairgrounds vendors line the streets selling arts and crafts from Central and South America, local foods--including delicious BBQ shish-kabobs--rum, beer, sodas and cotton candy! Inside are lavish displays of flowers, an orchid house, art exhibits, agricultural displays, Boquete's award winning coffee sampling stations, nightly concerts with dancing...you name it! It is a very merry gathering and will run through until January 18.
After the Caldera River flooded in December, there was concern that the festival might have to be canceled. The Boquetenas rallied together, however, and rebuilt all the gardens in a massive volunteer effort that included native Panamanians and those of us who have adopted this lovely country . The gardens and new river walk areaare stunning. What a great community this is!
